Lufthansa: three-day strike from today in Germany Smaller airports, where low cost airlines such as Ryanair or Wizz Air usually fly, maintain their services.
Germany's main airports will be without most of their air services from today, Wednesday, until Friday inclusive, due to a strike by Lufthansa ground staff (Wildcat strike at Lufthansa: 100,000 travellers are grounded).
The strike is a continuation of the conflict that saw eight major German airports paralysed on 20 February. However, that strike failed to bring the Verdi union and the company closer together, so another protest is being called.
Lufthansa says that since that strike it has made a new offer, which has obviously not been accepted. Michael Niggemann, the company's head of human resources, explained that the proposal involved a bonus of 3,000 euros for all workers as compensation for inflation, plus bringing forward the wage increases on offer.
For Verdi, the offer is insufficient and calls for either an increase of 500 euros per month for all workers, on a linear basis, or 12.5 per cent.
The next round of talks will take place in two weeks. The climate in the negotiations has deteriorated sharply. And it coincides with other industrial disputes, some of them at Lufthansa itself.
The last strike mainly affected all major airports in Germany, especially the two largest ones, Frankfurt and Munich. On the other hand, very small airports, where low cost airlines such as Ryanair or Wizz Air usually fly, maintain their services because they are not served by Lufthansa.
