Zu Anfang kamen Meldungen über das verschwundene Flugzeugs von Air Asia, das es 162 Passagiere an Bord des Fluges AirAsia Nr. QZ8501 geben würde. Später wurde aber bekannt, das es tatsächlich nur 152 Passagiere gab, denn 10 Fluggäste waren nicht rechtzeitig zum Abflug erschienen. Die zehn fehlenden Passagiere war e ine zehnköpfige indonesischen Familie. Diese hatte ursprünglich den Flug von AirAsia Nr. QZ8501 gebucht. Sie kamen nicht rechtzeitig zum Flughafen an. Sie wollten Neujahr in Singapur feiern. Sie hatten ursprünglich einen Flug für 7:30 Uhr gebucht,  aber AirAsia hatte die  Flugzeiten geändert und die Fluggäste entsprechend informiert. Doch diese Information erreichte die Familie nicht rechtzeitig, so kamen wir zu spät zum Flughafen. Die Familie war zunächst wütend über den verpassten Flug.
