Dennoch bleibt sie ein Rückzugsort für zahlreiche Arten, die hier Nahrung und Schutz finden. Wissenschaftler*innen setzen sich für den Erhalt des fragilen Ökosystems ein.---------- An der engsten Stelle der Straße von Gibraltar sind Europa und Afrika nur 14 Kilometer voneinander entfernt. Rund 100.000 Schiffe passieren jährlich die Meerenge zwischen dem Atlantik und dem Mittelmeer. Unter der Wasseroberfläche treffen zwei unterschiedliche Lebensräume aufeinander: atlantische Seegraswiesen und mediterrane Steinkorallenriffe bilden gemeinsam ein hybrides Ökosystem mit großer Artenvielfalt. Das kalte Wasser des Atlantiks sinkt ostwärts ab, während das warme Wasser des Mittelmeers westwärts aufsteigt.
