The storm Ciaran, which in a process of explosive cyclogenesis is hitting the French, English, Belgian, Dutch and, to a lesser extent, Spanish coasts (with winds of up to 170 kilometres), is causing the cancellation of air operations in several countries. "It is not a hurricane, but its impact will be very similar in terms of wind," warns the Aemet.
In the Netherlands, KLM has cancelled all take-offs and landings as a precautionary measure. On the island of Guernsey, Aurigny has suspended all flights between Wednesday and Thursday. In Jersey, too, the airport was virtually unable to operate.
However, Bornemouth airport on Britain's south coast continued to operate normally and Ryanair flights departed and landed normally. A flight from Malaga, for example, landed a few minutes before the scheduled time (7.25am). The 6.30 a.m. flight to Tenerife departed with some delay. Gatwick airport, on the other hand, was operating normally despite the winds. Flights between Bordeaux and Gatwick, both in the risk zone, operated without difficulty.
At Southampton airport, on the other hand, many flights were cancelled: the 6.30am flight to Paris, the 8.10am flight to Guernsey, the 8.20am flight to Jersey, although it tried to operate some flights.
At Brussels Zaventem airport, operations were normal, although some flights were cancelled, especially from Amsterdam, where KLM was much more cautious. Arrivals were delayed, but it is more difficult to be sure of the link with the storm.
