Strong dangerous aftershock near Quito, Ecuador – at least 12 people injured, 1 serious

Last update: August 16, 2014 at 5:08 pm Earthquake-report – Update 16:32 UTC : All the currently reported injured are traffic linked incidents, 2 in a car and 10 people in a bus Update 16:26 UTC : The Mayor of Quito, Mauricio Rodas just reported at the Ecuadorian newspaper El Universo that the aftershock was responsible for 12 injured people (intermediate status). The initial depth of 2.5 km has now been recalculated to 5 km or the same than the mainshock (very logical!) Update 16:17 UTC : 2 slightly injured people and 1 seriously injured are reported so far Update 16:15 UTC : The aftershock today (the new epicenter is confirming our earlier expectation of an aftershock) is slightly weaker than the mainschock earlier this week. More aftershocks can be expected today and the coming days. IG Ecuador mentioned 5.1 as the mainshock and 4.7 as today’s strong aftershock. Update 16:12 UTC : Based on new epicenter data, we expect the epicenter to be located more West of Cayambe (luckily and just West of the Middle of the world (Mitad del Mundo). Preliminary epicenter locations are always having an error margin, also today. Update 16:03 UTC : The Quito International airport has again been evacuated Update 15:54 UTC : Enormous dust clouds again. ER expects that the cause of this earthquake is the same Quito fault as the depth from the hypocenter (rupture point) is also extremely shallow. At the moment conflicting epicenter location. Update 15:40 UTC : At least 2 injured people are reported right now Update 15:38 UTC : First reports from the epicenter area are mentioning cracked walls. Due to the depth Earthquake-Report calls this earthquake moderately dangerous. We do not exclude injuries at this depth. The dangerous radius should be about 15 km. Update 15:33 UTC : the exact epicenter should be at 43 km North East of Quito, close to Cayambe Update 15:30 UTC : IG Ecuador reports a M4.9 Magnitude at a very shallow depth + new dust clouds are reported in the city! Update 15:24 UTC : Preliminary Magnitude M4.6 (Geofon – Germany) – Same epicenter than the mainshock. 11km (7mi) W of Cayambe, Ecuador 21km (13mi) S of Otavalo, Ecuador 32km (20mi) S of Atuntaqui, Ecuador 37km (23mi) SSW of Ibarra, Ecuador 43km (27mi) NE of Quito, Ecuador
