China: Dozens stranded on highway in massive sandstorm
More than 100 people trapped on highways due to a massive gale have been
rescued by firefighters in Turpan City of northwest China's Xinjiang
Uygur Autonomous Region on Saturday.
Seven firefighters rushed to the scene immediately after receiving an emergency call at 11:10
on Saturday claiming that 42 people in more than 10 vehicles were
trapped on the Turpan-Toksun Highway by a force-12 gale, with the
visibility reduced to less than two meters.
Firefighters then
rushed to the next site -- the Xiaocaohu section of National Highway G30
-- where hundreds of people were trapped by the gale.
Firefighters first put the elderly, women and children into the armoured vehicle. As of 19:00 Saturday, a total of 118 people have been rescued from the highway and more than 100 others are still trapped.
