Water main bursts flooding homes in south London
People living in Herne Hill in south London have woken up to flooding after a water main burst.
Streets in the Herne Hill area of south London were underwater after a large water main burst at around 5am.
Vehicles could be seen stranded in the floodwater, which spread over a radius of more than 100m (110yd).
Bruce Gain from Brixton Fire Station said between 30 and 50 houses were affected, many of them with basements.
"To be honest we have had other floodings in London but this was excepionally large.
"From the outside it's like looking at a boating lakes, albeit you had car roofs sticking out the top of it, " he said.
Fire service personnel are stil at the scene assisting with the clean-up operation.
One resident described the incident as "dramatic' while a local business owner said the scale of the damage had yet to sink in.
