Eine Mondfinsternis tritt immer dann ein, wenn der Mond im Schatten der Erde steht und somit nicht mehr voll von der Sonne bestrahlt wird. Nur wenn eine Vollmondphase besteht, tritt dieses Ereignis ein. Bei einer totalen Mondfinsternis befindet sich der Mond dann im vollen Kernschatten der Erde. Da er trotzdem mit langwelligem rotem Sonnenlicht bestrahlt, ist er dann schwach als sogenannter Blutmond zu sehen. Um 6:53 Uhr Mitteleuropäischer Zeit (MEZ) wird der Mond in den Halbschatten der Erde eintritten, um 7:58 Uhr wird er den Kernschatten erreicht haben. Die totale Mondfinsternis beginnt dann um 9:06 Uhr, die Mitte ist um 9:45 Uhr erreicht. Beendet ist sie um 10:24 Uhr. Um 11:33 Uhr tritt der Mond aus dem Kernschatten der Erde, um 12:37 Uhr dann aus dem Halbschatten. Zu sehen ist die Mondfinsternis am 15. April 2014 aber nicht in allen Teilen der Erde.
