Tens of thousands of Spanish coal miners continued to march through Madrid on Wednesday, protesting against a cut in subsidies. Some had walked for several days from coal-producing areas of León, Asturias and Aragón, arriving in the city on Tuesday night. The miners say recent austerity cuts will cause 8,000 miners and 30,000 others to become unemployed. Spain has implemented harsh austerity in order to meet stringent EU targets. There were also heavy clashes between riot police and the demonstrators during the protests.
