Storm Force Katie: Britain is battered by rain, floods and 105mph winds which terrify plane passengers trying to land at Gatwick

While helpless passengers are left stranded at our airports, stations and ports, the sheer force of Storm Katie (inset) is causing havoc on our roads. Hurricane winds have battered Britain since the tempest hit the country last night causing floods, felling power lines and leaving whole trees strewn across our streets. Those travelling back from breaks across the country are being advised to be careful on the roads, while forecasters are also urging motorists to delay their journeys until later today if possible. Last night, the weather attacked the roof at the Duchess Pub in Nine Elms, Battersea (left), leaving debris strewn across the road (right) while a residents of a street in Brighton could consider themselves extremely lucky to escape unharmed when a giant tree was ripped from his roots and thrown across a suburban road like it was a twig caught in a gust of wind (centre).
