Tsunami-Earthquake near Algiers, Algeria – Secousse dangereux près d’Algers – At least 420 injuries + 6 (indirect) fatalities

Update 12:15 UTC : The
number of injuries and fatalities is still on the rise. Hospitals in all
affected areas of northern Algeria, mainly Algiers, Boumerdes, Blida
and Tipasa, reports at least 420 injuries, but only 21 in critical conditions. 6 people died in panic reactions or by heart attacks.
The damage was not as severe as it could be, if the epicenter would not be offshore. Nevertheless, several houses suffered major damage with collapsed walls, ceilings and/or balconies. Others developed cracks. There are no reports of completely destroyed houses, even if some families were displaced. It’s not clear if any of the reported injuries is connected to earthquake damage, but it seems that nearly all of them victims of the mass panic.

Important Update 11:00 : The victims toll of this earthquake is gradually increasing. Only slight damage BUT 5 people killed and at least 72 injured.
Update 10:47 UTC : To be
trusted information comes in now that the number of injured has
increased to 51. The Ministry of Interior of Algeria has setting up a
crisis cell to coordinate all necessary measures after the earthquake,
among them getting information from the various hospitals, inspecting
houses, buildings and infrastructure for structural damage, etc.
Update 10:13 UTC : 2 people made the biggest mistakes of their life by jumping from 3th floor balconies.
They have paid it with their lives as the passed away in the hospital
due to their severe injuries. These fatalities are official.
Unofficially we have knowlidge of “at least” 2 other indirect earthquake
victims. They succumbed due to heart failures.
Update 09:53 UTC : A
(still controversial) 2011 article in an English newspaper states that
Europe (Eurasian plate) maybe subducting the African plate, just reverse
of what what/is going on since long time. Today’s earthquake mechanism
will be great information for the University who is currently examining
this theory
Update 08:10 UTC : 21 injuries, 12 in Algiers, 8 in Boumerdes and 1 in Blida
Update 07:58 UTC : Some people tell media that they have seen tsunami waves
in the sea. Stronger waves than normal are indeed possible as the
epicenter of the earthquake was very close to the shore. Strong currents
is maybe a better word and we would advise people to stay out of the
say today as very strong aftershocks can still occur. For real meter
high tsunami waves the Magnitude must be at least M7 or more. The type
of earthquake is however really dangerous for tsunamis as it is a
subduction area. The main movement is up and down, enabling large masses
of water being pushed upwards or downwards during the shaking. Whenever
you feel a very strong shaking at the Algerian coast it would be wise
to go for higher ground!
Update 07:52 UTC : There
are reports from people jumping from balconies in higher buildings.
these people are currently treated in hospital. There are also various
reports mentioning cracks in buildings in Algiers and Boumerdes
Update 07:45 UTC : New
reports are indicating 16 injured people and 2 fatalities. Being shaken
in your bed and running outside the building is a very frightening
experience. This morning this happened to millions of people who left
their houses for the street, not a wise decision as running to the
streets while the shaking is still going on can be much more dangerous
than staying inside. Only leave the house when the shaking has stopped
AND always evacuate afterwards to open spaces OR if not available to the
middle of the street.
Update 07:44 UTC : The
type of earthquake is Convergent or also called subduction where one
plate gets over the other resulting in a mainly not so dangerous up and
down movement. The most dangerous earthquakes are transform earthquakes
where the main movement is horizontal. A country where often transform
earthquakes are happening is Turkey. We derive our information from the earthquake type from the beach-ball below.
